The hardness and reliability of concrete makes it a desirable surface in many circumstances. Usually, it is the first choice in industrial and commercial spaces, but residential properties also boast with concrete put to good use. It is even possible to give it great shine and turn it into a luxury floor surface.
What shiny concrete floors are like?
We are dealing here with a hard surface like stone. If you look closely, you can see all the aggregates in it (these can be tiny, small, medium or large). It’s basically exposed aggregate, only that it looks extremely well polished. The surface is hard, but perfectly smooth and shiny. You will often see this in luxury stores but also around pools. Lately, it makes a great option for kitchens, too. Choosing the right concreting company will help you get the best materials.
How to polish concrete?
There are two ways to achieve this. Either way, you will have to employ professionals. They will work with an existing surface and either use a chemical seal or polish it mechanically on its surface.
• The chemical polish method uses a polyaspartic coat or epoxy paint, which gives the shiny finish. It refers to applying am extra layer or a coat that seals the surface, giving it a fancy shine. Additionally, this often has stain-resistant properties. Good exposed aggregate sealing can be achieved with urethane or acrylic sealers.
• The mechanical polish process involves a special machine that abrades the surface of the concrete layer. It’s a floor grinder that can use different grits. Its action is like sanding. Usually, the grit types need to be employed progressively. At the end, a raisin bond is used. Professionals also employ a concrete densifier right before this. There can be various levels of shine or reflection.
Knowing the disadvantages of each type of polishing work
Both methods ensure a surface with the desired level of shine. However, you must be aware of the existing differences and disadvantages before you commit to one type. Mechanical polishing is laborious and requires many tools. On the other hand, chemical sealing won’t last too long and will call for repeated polishing and sealing works. Depending on the chemicals used, a surface like this can last between one to five years. Epoxy paint tends to last the longest. Mechanically polished concrete indeed lasts longer.
Polished concrete floor maintenance
Polished concrete is very easy to clean thanks to its smoothness. You must be careful when using rough chemicals on a glossy finish, however. When washing it, always make sure the water is perfectly clean at the end. Residue buildup and shine obstruction can occur when the floor isn’t properly washed.
